Day 3 - Copenhagen

Today is a beautiful day -- bright blue skies, breeze and I'm the low 70's.  Today started with continental breakfast on the 11th floor overlooking the canal.  We walked to the train station next to make our train reservations for tomorrow's and Monday's train rides.  Mission accomplished.  Some are so small, we need to make sure we have a seat.

We walked across the street to Tivoli gardens to wait for the hop in/hop off your bus.  We sat next to a really nice couple from Fairmont, MN, who are celebrating their 30th anniversary by touring through Europe and they have been lots of places including St Petersburg, Russia.  Another couple used to live in Rochester, MN.  Small world!  We saw the Little Mermaid in the harbor, the Royal library known as the black diamond, Geflon Fountain, Rosenborg castle, amalienborg royal palace, etc.

After the tour, we started to walk, walk, and walk.  We found a pedestrian shopping mall that had Espirit and United Colors of Bennetton, Rosenborg Castle,(summer castle of King Christian )   Trinitas church, Amalienborg Palace (still used by the royal  family) the Marble Church started  in the late 1770's but finished in 1894 and modeled after St. Peter's in Rome), ate lunch in Nyhavn along the canal, Charlottenborg Palace, Royal Theater, etc.  some of these we will share in the photos.  At lunch  we shared a club sandwich which turned out to be a grilled chicken breast including a wing on toasted bread with beet greens/arugula, tomatoes and curry dressing.  Very good but so not what expected.

We learned some interesting facts: population is 5.3 million, Denmark is mostly islands with only a peninsula connecting it to mainland Europe,  their economy is booming, sales tax is 25% on everything, 50% income tax, 180% car tax on value of car and is yearly which explains all the bicycles, the govt. pays people from the  European Eastern block to come and pick out glass/plastic from the trash bins and they make more $ doing that than working at home and sometimes bring in the items with them, pickled herring and smoked salmon are among the favorite foods here, their breads and yogurt are amazing!

Jazz fest is this week and is at many venues around the city but the musicians were just starting to set up when we were wearing down so we walked back to the hotel.  We sat outside and had some wine/local beer listening to the jazz stage across the canal from the hotel so we got to experience the music (all sung in English) sitting in very comfortable chairs.  Life is good!
